Year 6 use maths skills to measure masts

Year Six have been using their maths skills to see if they would be able to work out the height of the mast on the tall ships that they will be setting sail on this summer.

After using three informal methods involving shadows, the thinking of the Native Americans and a method used by artists involving perspective, we decided we needed a more mathematical approach so we set about making clinometers, before going back outside to measure a tree - using it as a substitute for the mast!

The buzz of learning in the classroom was a joy as through a very practical approach, we stretched our maths skills and understanding in a real life problem solving activity.
