PE & Sport

At Shaldon, our aim is to provide a sports programme based on enjoyment, learning and performance.

We encourage children to engage in a healthy lifestyle and understand the importance of physical activity.  Through Physical Education the children are given many opportunities to practice and display our school values such as determination, friendship and excellence.

Our PE Curriculum aims to provide high quality PE for all children in line with National Curriculum guidelines. PE is taught by a specialist teacher, Miss Young and pupils receive 3 x 40 minute lessons each week.

Resources and facilities are very good and the school is part of the Dartmoor School Sports Partnership (SSP) which provides our children with the opportunity to participate in an innovative range of physical activities. Festivals in focus sports are offered termly. A whole class participates and this is a great way to inspire further learning. The partnership also provides us with many competitive events on a regular basis for KS2 children and we are consistently successful at local level and within the wider area of the SSP. We aim for our children to enjoy their sporting experiences, challenge themselves to try out new sports and ideas and develop teamwork.

At Key Stage 1 pupils learn about Dance, Gymnastics, and Games.

At Key Stage 2 pupils learn through Dance, Gymnastics, Swimming, Athletics,

Games and Outdoor Activities.

We proudly hold a Gold Award for our PE and sports provision from the 'School Games' initative. This a Government led awards scheme which reward schools for their commitment to the development of PE, sport and competition across their school.

Learning to Swim

Our children have regular swimming lessons in Years 3 to 6. We aim to develop the skills, understanding and knowledge necessary for pupils to become confident swimmers and stay safe around water. Swimming is great for fitness and an extremely sociable and fun leisure activity. We take this part of the curriculum very seriously from a safety angle, living as we do near the sea.

School Sport Clubs programme

We provide a broad range of clubs in traditional and non-traditional sports which are open to all.

Activities change each term but may include:

Key Stage 1: Gymnastics, Football, Tennis, Multi-skills, Dance

Key Stage 2: Netball, Handball, Basketball, Football, Tag Rugby, Cycling, Cricket, Dartmoor3 Ball, Rounders, Athletics, Dance, Gymnastics, Tennis

Recently our KS2 pupils had the opportunity to learn about Fencing and Street surfing. KS1 pupils have had taster sessions in Scootering and we hope to develop this as an after school club.

Children are encouraged to source clubs in the community to further develop their sporting ability. We are highly successful in both local and area competitions.

Active Lunchtimes

At Shaldon we recognize that this large chunk of the school day is a prime time to get children moving.  The children have access to large play equipment and also small equipment to enable positive and active play.  We also have a Sports Crew of Year 5 and 6 children who lead games with younger children and assist in making lunchtimes fun and enjoyable for everyone.
