Welcome to Year 1
Class Teacher: Mrs Smith
We encourage children to read at home as much as possible and reading books will be changed on a regular basis. A reading diary will accompany this if you would like to make any comments on how you feel your child is progressing in reading. We feel that reading in the most important part of a child’s learning at home, so this will be the focus of their home learning in Year One. In addition to reading, a small task will be set (usually maths). This will be given in a home learning book, which will be sent home in their book bags on a Tuesday and will be due in the following Monday.
Class 1 will have PE three times a week with our specialist PE teacher Miss Young. This will be on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Please make sure your child’s PE bag is in school on these days. It is important that all items are clearly labelled to ensure that nothing goes missing.
Learning in the Spring Term
This term, Year One have begun an exciting new science learning journey with the question: What Makes Our Planet Special? We have already discovered that we live on the only planet in the solar system we know to have animals and humans. Through exploring in our very own zoo role play and doing lots of very scientific thinking, we have been able to identify so many wild animals, classify them into groups and will even identify what they eat and what environments they live in. This short learning journey, will also lead us into joining with our whole school art journey later this term and into next term: Mr Coe has asked us for help! He needs us to help make some mosaics to showcase what is wonderful about the lovely village of Shaldon and to be displayed on the front of the school. In order to learn the skills needed for mosaics, we will consider the learning journey question: How can I become an expert in collage to help make a mosaic for my school? We will be learning lots of new artistic skills, and with all our scientific expertise on animals, we would love to make some collages and help with a final mosaic of the fantastic Shaldon Zoo and its unusual inhabitants.
