Welcome to Year 2
Class Teacher: Georgina Tonna
Welcome back to Shaldon Primary. I’m sure you’re all as eager as I am to start the new academic year. Our focus this half term is history, where we will be investigating the question ‘Why do people choose to explore?’
Through this question we will be digging deep into the life of Christopher Columbus, who showed great ambition, courage and independence to set sail across the seas to sell the family wool. Like Christopher Columbus, we aim to develop our own skills of ambition, courage and independence through unpicking the enquiry question. We will also be developing the key skills of asking and answering questions to achieve the best detailed response.
After gaining this knowledge, we will be comparing the work and life of Christopher Columbus to the explorers of the modern day. This, in turn, will help us gain vital knowledge and thinking skills to answer our enquiry question.
Please ensure that children are reading at least 3 times a week and completing at least 1 quiz a week if on Accelerated Reader. In class, we are really working hard to try and achieve children increasing their fluency and in turn, making simple inferences based on a text they are reading.
Homework will be given out weekly, normally maths, and is expected the same day the following week. We will also be working hard on our spellings. Each week you will find either a list of words to be learnt or a ‘speller of the week’ activity. This activity explains what to do on the sheet. This will enable the children not to just learn the words but to apply them into their writing. I will also be sending home a range of spelling activities and games you can try at home, so keep your eyes peeled!
To enable a love of writing, if your child does any excellent pieces at home make sure they bring it in to show me and the class – it may even get a spot on our ‘Super Writers’ wall!
Class 1 will have PE three times a week with our specialist PE teacher Miss Young. This will be on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Please make sure your child’s PE bag is in school on these days. It is important that all items are clearly labelled to ensure that nothing goes missing.
